Say (O Muhammad s.a.w.):
“Shall We tell you the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds?”
[Al-Kahf 18:103]

When Allah s.w.t. chooses to inform us about a certain category of people in the Qur’an, it is not simply just a piece of information about who they are, but it is for us to take heed and not fall into the same mistakes that they did.

“Shall We tell you the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds?”

Here, Allah s.w.t. is speaking about a category of people who are THE greatest and worst losers in terms of their deeds. This is definitely not the type of people that we want to be! Who are these people then? If we read the next several ayat, we find that Allah s.w.t. has already provided us with the descriptions about this group of people: they lack four specific characteristics. And what is amazing is that these descriptions also correspond with the four characteristics mentioned in surah Al-Asr:

Verily, man is in loss.
Except those who believe,
and do righteous good deeds,
and recommend one another to the truth,
and recommend one another to patience.
[Al-Asr 103:1-3]

The four characteristics that these people do not have are:
1. Correct faith / believe, as defined in Islam.
2. Righteous deeds – they do not do good deeds that adhere to the teachings of Rasulallah s.a.w.
3. Truthfulness they do not advise others to adhere to the truth, nor do they themselves adhere to the truth.
4. Patience – they do not advise others to be patient, nor do they themselves are patient.

Surah Al-Kahf teaches us that those who don’t have these 4 characteristics are the greatest losers in respect of their deeds (more will be explained in the next few Al-Kahf Challenge posts, insya Allah)
Surah Al-Asr also teaches us that every single man is in loss unless they have these 4 characteristics.

Therefore what we can conclude is that these 4 characteristics are the bare minimum requirements that we need to fulfill so that we do not fall into the group of people who are in loss! Understand that the ayah is not just referring to the disbelievers, so it also includes anyone who worships Allah in a way that is not acceptable by the Shari’ah.

May Allah s.w.t. protect us from becoming one of them.
