Be sure We shall test you with something of fear & hunger, some loss in goods, lives & the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Who say: when afflicted with calamity: “To Allah we belong & to Him is our return.” They are those on whom (descend) blessings from their Lord & Mercy and they are the ones that receive guidance.
1. When we are hit with calamity, we are taught to say “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon” – we acknowledge that the things that were taken away actually never belonged to us in the first place. If I myself belong to Allah, then surely everything I think I own (eg. my health / family / properties) actually belong to Allah.
2. Internalizing this is the key to sabr. But saying & giving reminder about this to someone else is very easy. Living by this ayat is a very difficult thing. At the moment of loss, sadness & difficulty – to be able to immediately say “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajioon” & be tranquil about it is a very difficult state to reach. It takes training of oneself to reach such mentality.
3. So Allah s.w.t. praises this mentality, as someone who reaches this is a person of a high caliber. Believers will be put through challenges to raise their ranks. Allah says they are the ones who will receive blessings & mercy from their Rabb & they are the ones truly committed to guidance (Al-Muhtadun).
May Allah s.w.t. help us internalize the teaching of this beautiful passage.
